These Tiny Houses by Rosa de Jong Are No Small Matter

Micro Matter — that’s the moniker for Amsterdam-based creative Rosa de Jong’s elaborate series of charmingly imaginative vertical biomes.
Each test tube appears to illustrate the cohabitation between man and nature though various carefully-arranged architectural and ecological environments, all of which seem to be no bigger than the big, fat Sharpie® in my pencil holder.
I’ve been a fan of de Jong’s creations for a while now, particularly for two reasons:
- Their almost fantastical, whimsical nature seeks to transport their viewers into a dreamland that’s filled with wonder and amazement.
- Simply put, they’re super fun.
Based on de Jong's work, I assume she has to be incredibly patient and meticulously detail-oriented in order to piece together each of her Micro Matter creations.
In fact, Christopher Jobson of ThisIsColossal.com — which, full closure, is how I found out about de Jong way back on my birthday in 2015 — briefly wrote about her process, stating, "Perhaps comparable to a ship in bottle, the little houses and buildings are all handmade using natural objects and some model making elements like faux moss. Some pieces even play with gravity and appear to grow both upward and downward, reminding me of paintings by Cinta Vidal or sculptures by Thomas Doyle."
Obviously, de Jong’s Micro Matter series still lives on today and appears to even be making appearances at galleries throughout the States, according to her Instagram page.
